iSTAR

iSTAR – the NERC Ice Sheet Stability Programme –  is improving understanding of ice losses from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, focusing on the areas where the greatest rates of change have been observed, including the Pine Island, Thwaites and Union Glaciers.

A suite of four research projects focusing on both the oceans (iSTAR A and iSTAR B) and ice, CPOM is involved in iSTAR C and iSTAR D which are investigating the Pine Island, Thwaites and Union Glaciers.

iSTAR C (Dynamic Ice) aims to understand the processes responsible for transmitting the effect of thinning of the Pine Island Glacier’s floating ice shelf upstream, and use this to predict the future ice thinning rates.

iSTAR D, led by Andy Shepherd, is using ice-based measurements of the Amundsen sector ice streams to reconstruct data missing from historic satellite records, reduce uncertainties in projections for the future, and provide a more comprehensive picture of mass ice loss.
