GLOBE: The Greenland Subglacial Lake Observatory
Start date: March 2024
End date: March 2029
Principal Investigator: Professor Mal McMillan, Lancaster University.
At the moment, very little is known about the circa 1600 subglacial lakes which lie hidden beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet. In fact, less than 5% have been discovered to date. As they are typically much smaller than the subglacial lakes beneath Antarctica most standard satellite methods are unable to detect them.
CPOM Co-Director of Science Professor Mal McMillan (Lancaster University) leads this project which focuses on advancing the ability to detect, monitor, forecast and understand the dynamics of active Greenland subglacial lakes at scale. GLOBE aims to create a Greenland Subglacial Lake Observatory that autonomously tracks, forecasts and disseminates lake activity, by:
1) Exploiting new, super-high resolution satellite data at scale.
2) Developing new methods that exploit unconventional data.
3) Developing novel deep learning and statistical forecasting methodologies.
