Studying the Antarctic rumple zone

16th February 2026

From December 2025 to January 2026 we followed CPOM’s Ali Banwell conducting field research in Antarctica, with a team of scientists from the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Maine. In the following series of five videos you can find out more about the techniques they used during their fieldwork and see some of the stunning landscapes they were working on.

About the project

The National Science Foundation (NSF) funded this project which is studying the Ice Rumple Zone of the McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica – a compressive region of the ice shelf characterized by undulating ice.

The scientists

  • Alison Banwell (PI) – Northumbria University/University of Colorado Boulder
  • Ryan Cassotto (Co-PI) – University of Colorado Boulder/University of Maine
  • Michela Savignano (PhD student) – University of Colorado Boulder
  • Allie Berry (PhD student) – University of Maine
